The project was presented<br />simultaneously in two remote places, at the Science Museum in<br />London and at the Raumlabor in Berlin. It extends the idea of<br />the home as a private and situated space to one that connects<br />homes in two different cities while still allowing individuals to<br />maintain that sense of privacy which is not possible with video<br />walls or cameras.<br />The Remote Home's floor space is distributed between London<br />and Berlin stitched together by digital networks. The system<br />consists of sensors, kinetic devices, and an interactive light<br />installation that together provide the means of communation.<br />The main focus is the Busy Bench which is embedded with a<br />kinetic device in each seat enabling segments of the sitting area<br />to move up and down in response to the movements of the Bench<br />in the other city. Motion sensors detect when a person is walking<br />activating a kinetic device within a remote textile wall in each<br />apartment. This walking movement causes the wall to bulge in<br />response to the walking causing the feeling and presence of a<br />person. Another element is the interactive glass table filled<br />with fine gravel which allows the user to manually reposition<br />the gravel resulting in the changing of a matrix of lights in the<br />ceiling of the other remote space. This element would only<br />exist in one of the remote spaces allowing one user to express<br />his mood in a simple drawing or scribble of the gravel.
